2025 is finally here, and I still can’t fathom how quickly 2024 seemed to pass. Every new year—much like spring—brings a sense of renewal and the opportunity for something different. It’s the perfect time for this since we hang new calendars and get used to writing a new year on checks (yes, I still write checks!).
For many, the new year is synonymous with resolutions—promises often made but rarely fulfilled. These resolutions make great conversation starters with coworkers, even though deep down, most know they won’t stick to them. Personally, I prefer setting “goals” rather than resolutions. They’re not rigid declarations but aspirations to work toward. The problem with traditional resolutions is that they’re often set too high, making failure almost inevitable. Instead, set the bar lower—any improvement or change is still an accomplishment worth celebrating.
Here are a couple of goals we, as a global community, can strive for:
It’s not that hard to accept others for who they are—individuals who don’t exist to meet your expectations, just as you don’t live to meet theirs. In my experience, almost everyone I’ve engaged with—regardless of their background—has reciprocated the respect I’ve shown them. Even the rare unpleasant interactions often stem from personal struggles, like mental health challenges. A little kindness and understanding go a long way.
We live on a beautiful and fascinating planet. Take a walk through a park or a forest, breathe deeply, and truly observe the world around you. There’s wonder in every detail. If you can, travel to other countries and marvel at the ancient man-made wonders. The architecture of the past, created without modern technology, is awe-inspiring. It’s a reminder of human ingenuity and creativity.
So, as we step into 2025, let’s aim to be kinder, more open, and more curious. Small changes like these can improve your life tenfold—and maybe even make the world a little brighter.
