The holiday season at the close of a year brings many emotions out in people, including those in my household.
Let me start by saying that I absolutely LOVE the Christmas season. For a large portion of the world it is the season of love, hopefulness and renewal. A small part of me is sad with the emphasis that is put on materialistic nature that this season brings versus what the true meaning signifies.
For another member of my household the season is one of emotional frustration. Being in the personal care service industry or retail is not easy at any time of year but it can be especially frustrating and draining during the end of year holiday season. The clientele becomes immersed in appearance, frustrated in their perception of lack of time and the indulgence of self-importance. They miss the entirety of the message that this season is.
Why do people continue to celebrate a holiday they have no spirit of? Why not replace the Christmas holiday with more attuned to what actually occurs. We could call it “rage, buy, buy, buy and tree day”. Very few seem to actually believe what they say they do when it comes to this holiday and would be satisfied with just having the day off from work.
I hear many people and politicians in America say there is a war on Christianity. There is. It does not come from an outside source but from within Christianity itself. They do not follow the teachings which Christ has outlined in the bible and God himself gave Moses in his top ten list. Christmas is a perfect example of the un-Christian characteristics of the people who are supposedly Christian. The same can be said for Catholics at mass on Sunday. They want in and out, rushing to the parking lot either right after they receive communion or right as mass concludes so they can be the first out of the lot.
I request, as I do every year, that there is peace on our small home called earth. As you put up your decorations, interact with others in public or even wish someone a Merry Christmas, mean it through your actions. Have love for your neighbor, care for others and reflect on the miraculous gift that we as a people were given.
