Why companies lose great talent - Vol. 1

There is no secret as to the first reason that companies lose great talent.

Feeling trapped in a deadend

Have you ever felt trapped in a situation such as a family gathering that you don’t want to be at? The same can be said for employees at your company.

Recently one such incident happened at a company where a person took a job as a night shift supervisor with the verbal understanding that they would want to move to the day shift in a couple years due their wanting to spend more time in the evenings with their young children. When an opportunity arose, they hired someone from outside the company for the dayshift position of manager. The night shift supervisor wound up leaving the company.

Another company had openings for managers and supervisors to which they brought in outside talent and skipped over promoting employees in house. Some of the employees they skipped over had been doing the job that was given to the outsider. Others which were skipped over had managerial and supervisor experience at previous employers.

When companies skip over promoting employees within there is a two pronged problem. One is that the companies will totally lose the talent they invested in training over the years. The second is that they kill the motivation of not just the employee they skipped over but also the ones who see this happen over and over (who also may leave as well).

What can companies do?

Get to know your employees.

While a company needs to focus on the business of whatever they do, they cannot do so at the expense of employees.
