I was just listening to this U2 song when I looked up the meaning behind it.

Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS who killed himself in 1997. It also reminds me of the poor people of Kensington on both sides of the fence, those who use drugs and those who live there.

In driving through the area I felt the same sadness I felt when I saw all the young cancer patients in my recovery wing or when walking the streets of any major city and seeing the homeless, especially in winter. Each of these brings this overwhelming desire to help each and every one of them. From curing their cancer to getting the people off the streets and back into a more meaningful and sustainable way of life than the harsh reality they live now.

One of the things I have learned (and am still learning) is that you have to listen to the person and not necessarily solve their problems for them. This goes against my nature as I have always been a “see the problem, solve the problem” type of person. The best thing you can do is to learn to truly care. To make a difference in someones life this cannot be a surface caring, it has to come from the core of your being.

This, and only this, will be how we can help. So be aware of those who may be in crisis and be there for them. Love and care for them from your core.
