The Supermodel and I recently made a trip to South Bend to visit my family members which live in that area. On my mom's side of the family we decided to go out to eat to catch up (since everyone worked during the day). We met at the East Bank Emporium and there were a total of 10 of us at the table.
The waitress, Jennifer, was an extremely polite and attentive hostess. This is rare in my visits to dining facilities and we appreciated her service very much.
The facilities were located on the St. Joseph river in downtown South Bend and the view was beautiful, once the sun was out of our faces. It seems the inner blinds of the restaurant are broken so we had bad sun glare for about 30 minutes depending where at the table you sat.
For dinner I ordered french onion soup, a farfalle dish with an alfredo style sauce, a local beer and the supermodel ordered a chicken pita. Where do I begin? If this venue had been a diner with pricing as such I may have been slightly more lenient on the review but it is not that way. (Just to let you know this review was really difficult to write as I don't like to write negative reviews). This venue is located in an area which has a lower cost of living and due to the high cost of each dish I had high expectations which were dashed beginning with the soup.
The french onion soup was an overabundance of salt and pepper with a just a few onions and topped with bread and cheese. There was absolutely no balance of the flavors.
The farfalle pasta was extremely dry. Not that this dish should be soupy but there should be some liquid component to it. This pasta tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for at least 30 minutes.
Now for the supermodels chicken pita. It was basically chicken salad topped with that plastic orange cheese. (Not a good look). Chicken salad is best not heated and this sandwich, to melt the plastic cheese, was heated. It was not good so she did not eat it and focused on the fries instead.
Overall for the money I would recommend only going here for a happy hour drink at their outside patio area with its great view and then stroll around to another venue in town, such as the Fiddlers Hearth or South Bend Brew Works, for dinner.
